How to paint watercolor digitally on a Mac
Choose Watercolor Paper
In the “New Canvas” card, pick “Watercolor Paper” under “Surface” and click “Create Canvas”. You can switch later with the “Surface” chips in the Studio sidebar.
Turn on paper texture
Open Settings ▸ Tools and switch on “Paper texture affects brushes”, which is off by default. Your washes then pick up the texture of the cold-press paper.
Pick a wash brush
Click the “Brush” tool (B) in the tools palette, then click it again to open its style tray. “Round Wash” is in the free version; “Watercolor”, which settles with darker edges, comes with Pro.
Set size and opacity
In “Tool Options”, set “Size”, and a low “Opacity” for a pale wash. With a drawing tablet for Mac, pressure changes the size of all six wash brushes and the flow of five of them.
Build color in washes
Lay a pale wash, then add darker passes on top. Each stroke stays translucent, so color deepens where strokes overlap, even where one stroke loops back over itself.
Let it settle and dry
When you finish a “Watercolor” stroke, its edge settles darker. While the paint is still wet, “Smudge” in the “Blend” family (R) drags it further than dry paint.
Digital watercolor painting that acts like wet paint
Paint My is a watercolor app for Mac that treats a wash as wet, translucent pigment. Each stroke has an opacity ceiling, so one pass stays translucent and color deepens where a second wash crosses the first.
“Watercolor”, “Ink Wash”, “Streaky Wash” and “Splatter Wash” settle with darker edges when you finish the stroke, and you see a preview of the rim while you drag. All six have an irregular outline, and five also vary in flow along the stroke, so washes do not look flat and uniform.
Each new brush-and-color combination starts its own layer, so you can hide, lock or change the opacity of one wash without touching the others. Free paintings keep up to 3 layers, then new strokes go on the active layer. Pro has no layer limit.
Realistic watercolor brushes: the six wash styles
Every card in the Brush style tray shows a preview stroke drawn by the paint engine, Pro styles included. Compare them in the Brush family of the brush library.
- Watercolor (Pro): light, uneven washes with a clear darker edge; it stays wet longer than the other five.
- Ink Wash (Pro): a wet, translucent wash for ink wash painting, with darker edges.
- Round Wash (one of the 14 free styles): an oval tip that turns with your stroke; pressure changes its size.
- Dry Brush (Pro): little water and broken streaks along the stroke.
- Streaky Wash (Pro): streaks along the stroke, a very uneven flow and a faint darker edge.
- Splatter Wash (Pro): throws droplets past the edge of the stroke, and the stroke settles darker at the rim.
Digital ink wash on your Mac
For ink wash painting, choose “Ink Wash” (Pro) and paint in black. Lower “Opacity” for pale gray tones, then build darker values on top: where same-color strokes overlap, the ink deepens, and each stroke settles with a darker edge.
Add crisp lines with the Pen & Ink family (N). Our sketching app for Mac guide covers pencil, charcoal and ink.
Watercolor paper, drying and exports
“Watercolor Paper” is a cold-press surface, one of 8 surfaces, all in the free version. With “Paper texture affects brushes” on, washes break up on its tooth; with it off, every brush paints as it does on “Fine Paper”.
Wet paint dries over time, at a pace set by each brush. Fresh paint glistens, then dries to its true color. That sheen is just for display, and you can turn it off at Settings ▸ Appearance ▸ “Wet paint sheen”. Wetness is not saved, so a reopened painting is dry.
Every export is free. “Export as PNG…” leaves the paper out, so unpainted areas are transparent, and “Export as JPEG…” uses the paper's flat base color, without its texture. “Export as Layered PSD…” keeps every layer.

Questions
Can you do realistic watercolor digitally?
Yes. Paint My is watercolor painting software for Mac. Its washes stay translucent, build up where strokes overlap and dry over time, and four of the six wash brushes settle with darker edges. Paint My does not imitate blooms or backruns.
How do you make digital watercolor look real?
Build up light, translucent washes instead of one heavy stroke, and use a brush that settles with a darker edge, such as “Watercolor” or “Ink Wash” (both Pro). Paint on “Watercolor Paper” with “Paper texture affects brushes” turned on.
Which paper texture should I use for digital watercolor?
Use “Watercolor Paper”, a cold-press surface, and turn on Settings ▸ Tools ▸ “Paper texture affects brushes”, which is off by default.
Which watercolor brushes are free?
“Round Wash” is one of the 14 free styles. “Watercolor”, “Ink Wash”, “Dry Brush”, “Streaky Wash” and “Splatter Wash” come with Pro, which unlocks all 57 brush styles.
Does the paint really dry?
Yes. Wet paint dries over time and smudges further while it is still wet. The glistening sheen is just for display and never appears in exports or files.
